CHARITY WALK EVENT FOR UNDERSERVED ADOPTED SCHOOLS

Hypermarket gathers more than 3,000 participants to raise funds for the needs of eight Perak schools

IPOH, Perak, May 3 (Bernama) -- Sunday morning view of the serene D.R. Seenivasagam Park came alive when more than 3,000 participants came together for a good cause during the Tesco Walk For Kids 2018 event organised by Tesco Stores (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (Tesco).

The charity walkathon saw families, children, students, teachers and local community walking a 3km scenic route within the compound and the park vicinity. Tesco Walk For Kids 2018 is Tesco Malaysia’s signature annual fund raising event, which is part of Tesco’s School Adoption Programme to support underserved schools.

This year, the event raised more than RM400,000 from participation fees, cash donations and in kind contribution from Tesco’s business partners and suppliers. All contribution will be channelled fully to eight beneficiary schools which are SK Seri Kepayang, Ipoh, SK De La Salle, Kampar, SK Pengkalan Pegoh, Ipoh, SK Bendang Siam, Changkat Jering, SK Pengkalan Baharu, Gopeng, SMK Tambun, Ipoh, SK Suak Padi, Bota and SK Dato’ Ishak, Lumut.

“We are touched with the support that we received from many especially our business partners and suppliers as this is our second time organising this event for our adopted schools. Last year we were able to help seven schools in Klang Valley, I am delighted that we could host this event in Ipoh this time to help our adopted schools in Perak to improve the schools’ facilities such as students’ toilets, library, computer lab, students’ chairs and desks for a better and conducive learning environment,” said Azliza Azmel, Corporate Services Director, Tesco.

Tesco Walk For Kids 2018 was flagged off by Y.A.M Raja Dato’ Seri Yong Sofia accompanied by Tesco Malaysia’s Corporate Services Director, Azliza Azmel and Karimah Tan Abdullah, CEO PINTAR Foundation.

Limited edition finisher medal were given to first 1000 participants to get across the finish line as well as goodie bags upon completing the walk. Participants were entertained by dance performances by a few of the beneficiary schools. Other activities includes physical challenges such as planking, push-ups, skipping and squats with attractive prizes given away to winners. Product sampling from Milo, Tesco brand and Bestari were also available for all participants.

In addition to the great support by the Malaysian community, a number of corporate companies also contributed towards this cause. Mr. DIY came forward as Gold sponsor for this year’s event. Other sponsors are Bestari Sales & Marketing, HappyLand, Yes Optical, Arkitek LLA, F&F, Kellogg’s, SportsDirect, Mondelez Malaysia, Delfi Marketing, Unilever, Steadler, Nestle, Mehko, Caldbeck Macgregor and many more.

“Our Walk For Kids event would not be possible without the help of both the Malaysian community as well as the corporate sectors. Our heartfelt appreciation goes to all our sponsors who have contributed cash, vouchers and products. The support given by teachers and parents from the eight adopted schools were also important in making this event a great success,” added Azliza.

Tesco Walk For Kids 2018 is one of Tesco’s annual fundraising efforts for its adopted schools since Tesco Malaysia launched its School Adoption Program together with PINTAR Foundation in November 2016 as part of its contribution in education of the children in the community. Through the three-year adoption programme, Tesco supports 61 adopted schools in terms of education, student welfare, nutritional awareness and greener living initiatives.
