FRIM ENCOURAGES INNOVATION, CREATIVITY AMONG STUDENTS

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 8 (Bernama) -- Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) has organised the 2019 FRIM Director General Trophy Innovation Competition for Selangor state schools to increase students’ interest in science as well as to raise awareness and knowledge on innovation.

The competition is also aimed at promoting creativity as well as expanding the students’ mind in creating designs applicable to daily life.

The competition themed, 'Conservation of Forest, Water and Wildlife towards the Sustainability of Biodiversity and Global Benefit', has successfully attracted a total of 33 innovations from 15 primary schools and 47 innovations from 26 secondary schools in the fields of forestry and environment; biotechnology and natural products; as well as renewable resources and engineering.

This first Selangor state level innovation competition was supported by the Selangor State Education Department.

The prize presentation ceremony was officiated by FRIM Director General (DG) Dato' Dr Abd Latif Mohmod at Dewan Alwy in FRIM yesterday. Also present were Selangor State Education Department Deputy Director Muhamad Radzi Abdullah, Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) Assistant DG (Technical, Science and Technology) Kamal Kormin as well as FRIM Innovation and Commercialisation Director Norhayati Nordin.

In his speech, Abd Latif said, “I hope everyone including FRIM, the Selangor State Education Department, teachers, students and other agencies involved will continue to support the research and innovation agenda to contribute to the development of scientific knowledge and technology."

"We should be ready to change our mindset from being a consumer to a person who triggers idea or innovator of the latest knowledge and technology," he added.

The panel of judges consisted of representatives of MyIPO, Malaysian Technology Development Corporation (MTDC), Malaysian Innovation Foundation (YIM), Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) and Multimedia University (MMU).

Apart from the first, second and third place winners in the Primary and Secondary Schools categories, there wre also special awards such as 'Science Solution', 'Domestic Solution', 'Best Video', 'Jury Choices' and 'Waste to Wealth'.

SK Rasa ‘Bio-eggcellent’ Project clinched the top prize for Primary School Category while ‘Multipurpose Chair’ by SMK Taman Tasik emerged as the champion for Secondary School Category.
