MOJALOOP FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES MOJALOOP CBDC CENTER OF EXCELLENCE LAUNCH IN SINGAPORE

KUALA LUMPUR, June 22 (Bernama) -- The Mojaloop Foundation has announced the launch of its Mojaloop Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) Center of Excellence (COE) in Singapore to advance financial inclusion in emerging markets.

In addition, the Mojaloop Foundation announced the appointment of Nick Drury, a seasoned executive with nearly 25 years of experience innovating payments technology to drive inclusion, as the Mojaloop CBDC COE Director.

Drury will oversee the operations and strategic growth of the COE and its initiatives, such as hackathons, workshops, and pilot projects. Through these efforts, the COE will examine how Mojaloop open source software can leverage CBDCs to reduce the costs and inefficiencies of fast payment platforms and cross-border payments.

The COE will extend Mojaloop’s ecosystem engagement, leverage Singapore’s proximity and connectivity to other regions and connect the underserved with financial services firms and government entities in the emerging digital economy.

According to a statement, to help guide the direction of the COE’s initiatives, the Mojaloop Foundation has also formed a Mojaloop CBDC COE Working Group comprising appointees from Mojaloop Foundation members, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Coil, Google, ModusBox, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), RedCompass Labs, Ripple and Sybrin.

“The Mojaloop CBDC Center of Excellence will further expand the Mojaloop Foundation’s efforts to advance financial inclusion in emerging markets.

“Led by our COE Director Nick Drury and supported by our Working Group, the COE will examine the ways in which CBDCs have the potential to make a wider spectrum of Mojaloop-enabled push-payment capabilities available to central banks and their citizens, merchants and digital financial institutions,” said Mojaloop Foundation Executive Director Paula Hunter.

Meanwhile, Drury said: “I am excited about the opportunity to lead the Mojaloop CBDC COE’s Working Group members and bring in additional organisations from across the region to investigate the ways that Mojaloop and CBDC technology can solve real-world challenges for emerging markets.”

COVID-19 and the rise of contactless payments have prompted many central banks to consider CBDCs as a way of lowering the cost of settlement. By making digital payments and cross-border transfers seamless, the Mojaloop CBDC COE aims to identify ways to remove the restrictive hurdles and high fees that have been barriers to advancing financial inclusion in the past.

Coral Triangle Day 2022: Mary Kay Inc sheds light on preservation efforts

KUALA LUMPUR, June 10 (Bernama) -- To celebrate Coral Triangle Day, Mary Kay, a global sustainability advocate, sheds light on the efforts being made to preserve the health of this region which is vital to the overall health of our world.

The Coral Triangle, home to over 120 million people, is a vital source of food and biodiversity for the planet.

The waters of Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Solomon Islands, and Timor-Leste are by far, the most diverse and productive ecosystems in the ocean, therefore making them commonly known as the rainforest of the sea.

“The Coral Triangle has the highest coral diversity in the world. Almost 80 per cent of the world’s coral species are found there. Fifteen coral species are endemic to the region, which means they aren’t found anywhere else on the planet,” said Dr Elizabeth Mcleod, who leads on reef conservation for The Nature Conservancy.

“This area is also home to the highest diversity of coral reef fishes in the world, including 37 per cent of the world’s coral reef fish species, and 56 per cent of the coral reef fishes in the Indo-Pacific region. Our partnership with funders like Mary Kay enables TNC and our local partners to restore and protect this critical coral reef region.”

Recognising the importance of this valuable ecosystem and its vast biodiversity, the six countries that make up the Coral Triangle joined together to focus on the preservation of the area.

According to a statement, The Nature Conservancy, with support from Mary Kay, has created regional-level conservation initiatives that have a significant impact on the territory.

For more than two decades, TNC has established strong country programmes in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands while also growing trusted partnerships with local communities, businesses, and governments.

Extensive work has been done to establish Marine Protected Area networks across the Coral Triangle. In Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, Ridges to Reefs planning, which unites local knowledge and the best available science, has been supported and developed to facilitate the sustainable management of marine and coastal resources.

The Nature Conservancy also works collectively with the Coral Triangle Initiative, a multilateral partnership of six countries working together to sustain coastal and marine resources, to ensure that a gender-responsive and inclusive platform for conservation is created.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 7 (Bernama) -- Nippon Express (Belgium) N.V./S.A., a group company of Nippon Express Holdings Inc, has established its fourth business location in Belgium -- the Genk Logistics Centre -- in Genk Green Logistics Park situated in the east of the country.

BEST'S COMMENTARY: EMBEDDED INSURANCE GRADUALLY GAINING A FOOTHOLD

MEXICO CITY, June 7 (Bernama-BUSINESS WIRE) -- With the use of embedded insurance gaining greater global traction, AM Best notes that the role of regulation in protecting policyholders is critical and serves to encourage further acceptance of this distribution concept.

Embedded insurance coverage is developed by a carrier, but is distributed through non-insurance channels. It also is available across multiple markets, although it lacks common characteristics in terms of transparency, regulation and overall success. It often complements another product or service offered and has a limited insured amount.

In a new Best’s Commentary, titled, “Embedded Insurance Gradually Gaining a Foothold,” AM Best notes that in the United States, embedded insurance is starting to gain interest across the whole distribution chain and companies are working on facilitating its implementation. E-commerce and insurtech have given rise to specialty insurers that use embedded insurance as their main distribution channel. Across Latin America, leading online retailers offer extended guarantees on a range of electronic devices. Using blockchain, companies—mostly in Europe—are developing insurance solutions that can be embedded in noninsurance products. Additionally, embedded insurance is similar to microinsurance in that it can foster financial inclusion and enhance insurance culture in less-educated or low-income segments of the population by normalizing and promoting insurance coverages in goods that most view as essential.
